Break Up and Bridge

This strategy is used to add numbers quickly moving from left to right. We will use it specifically with adding decimals.

Question: 2.34 + 4.48

When working through the question we will start with the first number, and then bridge to the first place value of the second number moving from left to right. We would think 2.34 + 4 equals 6.34, then we would bridge to the four and think 6.34 + 0.4 equals 6.74, and finally we would bridge to the last number the 8 and we would think 6.74 + 0.08 = 6.82, which is the sum of 2.34 + 4.48.

We will also use this strategy to tackle addition questions with three numbers like: 2.13 + 3.27 + 4.63
